The official count is low because incidents are not being reported, and reports are how patrols get assigned and how cases get connected. A break-in that was never reported does not exist to the department. It is not too late to file one.

Lock the car, bring the garage remote inside, leave a porch light on, keep bags and mail out of view from the street. Most of what has been taken was reachable in under a minute.
Several people nearby are elderly and found out about all of this by word of mouth, or not at all. A knock on the door does more than a flyer.
